About The Artist
Artist, Ms. Michael James, is fast becoming a Maui Institution. Retired science teacher, now full time artist, hero and friend barely scratch the surface. Twenty five years spent teaching science to middle school adolescents, untold hours of honing artistic skills, a selfless act single-handedly rescuing two girls and their father from certain drowning off south Maui waters - these only begin to introduce this dear friend and aunty of two Hawaiian Immersion students.
Michael's artistic career began under inauspicious circumstances. Recovering from serious illness's, she sketched from a "how to draw cartoon characters" book, while sipping coffee at local shops. Patrons soon took interest in Michael's work and suggested subjects for her drawings. Before long, they asked for the drawings themselves.
Michael's work is an expression of her love for Maui, it's people and culture. Her connection with her subjects are hallmarks of Michael's work. Hyper- realism (called trompe loeil) is Michael's soul expression, where her accurate depictions go beyond photographs into a three dimensional realm. She is recognized as an outstanding artist, with work featured in the Lahaina Art Society and the Schaefer Portrait Gallery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
